Q Assignment Overview & Objectives The Research Presentation Assignment meets Course Learning Objective 2: Apply interpersonal communication theory to analyses of the self and of real interpersonal relationships. This assignment is intended to: • encourage you to apply what you are learning in this class to the improvement of actual relationships, • increase your literacy of published social science research, • help you learn to organize ideas and articulate information in a coherent and succinct way, and • develop your delivery skills for professional/academic presentations. This assignment requires a series of parts/steps leading up to the delivery of your presentation, and you will complete only one part at a time. In Part 1 you will select a concept or theory from this class that helps you better understand the communication issues in a specific relationship and find a research study about the theory/concept you chose. In Part 2 you will insert the information you found into a research presentation outline, using an outline template provided by me. In Part 3 you will record your presentation and two of your peers will evaluate it- you will also evaluate two peers. In Part 4 you will submit your final 3-5 minute recorded presentation. As stated above, this assignment requires a series of steps, and you will complete only one step per week, leading up to the delivery of your presentation. Your current task is only the following step: Part 1: Choose a Concept/Theory and Find a Research Study A. Review your Digital Story. B. Find a specific theory or concept from the textbook to describe the communication issue you addressed in the Digital Story. C. Read Appendix A in your textbook. Then, use the SBCC library database to search for a research article on the specific communication concept or theory topic you chose. The article must appear in a peer-reviewed academic journal (see tips below). Plan to find at least two possible articles, from which you will select only one. D. Then, draft your answers to these questions in a separate document, save a copy for your own backup, then paste your work here and submit: 1. What concept from the textbook helps you better understand the communication issue/challenge in this relationship? List the chapter and page number where you found the concept or theory. 2. List two articles you found in full APA format (do not share the link, type out the full citation in APA format). You will only choose one for the final project. 3. What was the most interesting thing you learned from the article you think you will select (between the two)? Follow these important guidelines to make sure you fulfill the assignment requirements: o Go to the SBCC Online Library HomepageLinks to an external site.. o Search your topic in the One Search bar: In the search box, use search term phrases to help you find an article. Insert your selected keyword, theory, or concept (for example, negative attributions) in the search bar and then search each combination as Subject terms (SU): ______ AND relationships or ______ AND interpersonal or ______ AND communication (for example, I would conduct three separate searches 1) negative attributions AND relationships, 2) negative attributions AND interpersonal, 3) negative attributions AND communication, to see which combination generates a useful article) ? Limit your results to articles that qualify for this assignment by making sure you select Full Text AND Peer Reviewed Journals. ? Make sure the article you choose is from a journal listed in your textbook in Appendix A, and make sure it is full text, not just an abstract. o When you find an article to read, focus on the Introduction and the Discussion sections. If the article is useful in better understanding your relationship, use it. o If you need help, a librarian can help you search. The concept that best helped me understand the ‘journey’ that has been our relationship is Chapter 10, ranging from pages 267 to 268 particularly covering Knapp’s model of relational de-escalation which discussed my behavior as avoidant and better allowed me to understand how our relationship evolved based on how we communicated till its eventual termination.
